What is Setup?

A tool for everyday matchmakers

Setup is a tool that organizes non-professional matchmakers' networks of single friends and collaborators, helping them follow through on setting people up. It is designed to enhance real world matchmaking conversations, not to get users to spend more time on their phone

Setup also researches dating apps, singles events, and professional matchmakers to better understand the impact that peer-to-peer matchmaking has on the industry and society. Setup is especially interested in the impact that AI-based suggestion algorithms have on our social lives. Check out our research here.

Why Use Setup?

Improve your community engagement

Use Setup so that you can say "let's check!" rather than "let me try to remember" when someone asks if you know someone for their single friend. Without organization, introductions are more likely to slip through the cracks. Help your friends out! You have a skill that AI matching algorithms can (currently) only dream of replicating- an embodied understanding of personality, relationships, and connection. Practice this skill or lose it!

How Do I Use Setup?

Add singles and comatchmakers

Add people you actually know in real life. Singles don't need to download anything. They sign up with a quick web form, so even your laziest friend won't have a reason not to join.

Matchmake with friends

Start a "Room" with up to 5 matchmakers and select a single to discuss. To protect singles' privacy, their profiles are only visible in real time while their authorized matchmaker is present.

Send singles matches

Tell each single when you think you've found a good match, then send an introduction if they're both interested.

What's in Setup

Live Matchmaking Rooms

Open a Room in Setup while matchmaking.

  • Open a Room with up to 4 comatchmakers. Start chatting about your friends. See what compatible singles the other comatchmakers have
  • Only see singles of matchmakers who are actively in the room. If a matchmaker leaves the room, their singles leave with them
  • Compatibility is based only on age, gender, and location. Everything else is up to the matchmakers who know the singles' personalities and backgrounds
  • Suggest matches together; matchmakers have to agree before a single sees an introduction

Comatchmakers

  • Connect with friends and family to expand your network of singles
  • See the number (but not the identity) of compatible candidates comatchmakers have for each of your singles.

Singles

Your single friends don't need to download anything. They use the singles portal— a quick web form to authorize you as a matchmaker and review the matches you suggest.

  • Two-minute sign-up— no app required
  • Manage matchmakers through the web portal
  • Stays out of their daily life; they only hear from Setup when a matchmaker has something to share
  • Send a nudge when a matchmaker has gone quiet— their profile pops to the top of that matchmaker's portfolio for 5 hours with an orange star, so they're the next single the matchmaker thinks about

Communities

  • Join a community (like your place of worship, friend group, or an event) and connect with new matchmakers
  • See the number of compatible candidates community members have for each of your singles, then follow up with them to discuss.

What's Not in Setup

  • No algorithmic feed
  • No fake profiles
  • No paywalls
  • No data monetization
